My name is Ann Solano. I am an Environmental Science and Natural Resource major. I go to Sitting Bull College in Fort Yates, ND. My mother is a member of the Hunkpapa Lakota and my father is a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Tribes. I am enrolled with my father’s tribes but am closer to Standing Rock. I am 47 years old now and the proud mother of Elias and Hector Solano. I figured it would be a good time to go to school. It keeps me happy and occupied since my sons grew up. I love the science field. I am also very active about indigenous issues in Indian Country from North, South, and Central America. At times I am very frustrated about the mindset of our society and what we do to Mother Earth. I pray I use my education to benefit Indian Country. I really believe also that Western society has tried to manipulate our environment for its own benefits. The key is learning what our environment naturally produces instead of manipulation. We are the factors that need to adapt. I considered it a privilege to be part of the Zaaga’igan team.
