Nick Hawthorne

I am an Earth Sciences undergraduate at the University of California at Santa Cruz. My passion for water is rooted in my upbringing in rural northern California, where as a child I was submerged in culture surrounding water. As a child I swam, fished, and kayaked the Smith River which is the longest free running river in the state, and grew intimate with rivers as my life progressed. I have been a whitewater kayaker for about nine years now which has exposed me to various watersheds around the world, giving me the most precious experiences and awaking me to the destruction of precious habitat that is becoming all too common. I study Earth Science in the hope that I can give back to nature in exchange for all she has provided me. I plan to pursue a masters degree in a field such as Hydrologic Science, Environmental Engineering, or Earth Systems. I am very fortunate and thankful to be a part of this program, and hope my experiences here help shape my future as well as the environment.
