Ryan Gustafson is a student from southern California interested in science and the outdoors. Ryan’s interest in the outdoors, and subsequently the sciences as a tool for describing it, were inspired by a life changing hike to Yosemite’s Half Dome in 2008. That hike to Half Dome sparked an interest that would completely alter his life’s path and steer him on the road to the sciences. Ryan is now studying environmental engineering at Humboldt State University in northern California, against the backdrop of California’s coastal Redwoods. With his degree, Ryan hopes to combine his interests in science and the outdoors by applying the things that he has learned to improve the environments that have so inspired him. River restoration, water quality, and phytoremediation are the areas of environmental engineering that spark his interest. In his spare time Ryan enjoys hiking, mountain biking, road biking, and being an active member of his school’s environmental engineering community.
